ISS Introduces Japanese Culture in Vsetín

A presentation on Japanese culture took place on 16 March 2017 in the conference hall
of the Masaryk Public Library as part of a series organized by the library called A Year on the Road. INDET SAFETY SYSTEMS a.s. (ISS) representatives, Shinya Moriyoshi (M., CP Dept.) and Katarína Kissová (CP Dept.), introduced Japanese culture to the public along with customs and, last but not least, some of the countless distinctions of Europeans versus Asians.

K. Kissová studied English – Japanese philology in Olomouc. She lived in Japan for five months and in the past year she has visited the country on regular business trips.
S. Moriyoshi, a Japanese native, has been working in Vsetín since 2012. He enriched the presentation speaking in his native tongue and imparting interesting details of the lives of the Japanese. The lecture was focused on typical Japanese customs and mannerisms and also on habits that are different and even shocking from the European perspective. Around one hundred listeners came to Thursday’s event launching the March series about Japan.

Japanese arts enthusiasts can look forward to two more events in the library. A reading session, entitled In the Shadow of a Sakura – Fly through the World of Books, will take place on Thursday, 23 March. This event will be held in smaller and cozier central rental rooms of the library and it will introduce Japanese literature from the samurai era until 1Q84. Apart from the introduction and readings in Czech, the participants can also look forward to a demonstration in the original Japanese as well. The last of the planned activities in the March cycle is a workshop in Japanese writing, calligraphy, which will take place on 29 March under the guidance of experts from the Czech – Japanese Association from Prague. The program is organized in cooperation with ISS and it will introduce the Japanese writing system, teach participants how to copy kanji signs and to write their names in the katakana syllabary.

Japan, land of the rising sun, is one of those places that draws travelers due to its exoticism and intangibility. Most European tourists, who have visited this country, talk about a culture shock of one confronting a foreign and a completely different culture. Typical topics are different cuisines, climate, language, new customs, but also the difficulty of applying the same social interaction skills that one has acquired in their native environments.

ISS is very pleased that it could participate in such an exclusive event held in Vsetín and that it could raise awareness about Japan, at least a little bit, with this two-hour presentation.
