“Vyprošťování 2016” Firefighting Contest

The firefighting unit from the Zlín region and the Vsetín Firefighting Sports Club hosted the XXI. Annual Firefighting Competition of the Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic (FRS CR). Units from the Zlín and Olomouc regions were among those participating in car crash rescue simulations. The event took place on 8 September 2016 at 9 am at TJ Stadium in Valašské Meziříčí.

Four teams competed for the Zlín and Olomouc regions; eight teams participated in the competition in total. The top Olomouc region unit, from Přerov, and the top Zlín region unit, from Uherský Brod, qualified for the National FRS Czech Republic Championship , which will take place in Mladá Boleslav from 14 -15 September 2016.

The competition helps firefighters to learn to improve and accelerate their techniques while rescuing injured people from crashed vehicles, which is not just about a one-off training exercise, but takes effort and repeated practice by all members of the unit.

The competition has rules strictly set and overseen by trained referees. In short, the organizers prepare a secret accident scenario for a competing unit, who are isolated. After leaving confinement, the unit have 20 minutes (15 + an additional 5 minutes) to rescue the passengers while the leader has to determine a safe and quick strategy using the appropriate firefighting techniques, fire safety equipment and firefighting. The rescue is completed when the injured person is transferred into the care of paramedics.

INDET SAFETY SYSTEMS a.s. (ISS) and the “Vyprošťování” Competition have one mutual interest  - saving human lives. As an automotive industry manufacturer, specifically of pretensioners for safety belts and airbag initiators, ISS aims to protect motorists and supports events promoting safety in this area.

Unfortunately, traffic accident statistics still show high accident rates and it is necessary to deal with this issue constantly and intensively. Por. Bc. Libor Netopil, spokesperson for the FRS in the Zlín region, summarizes the rescues performed by the firefighting units from the Zlín region during the summer months in his article.  He states, “Compared to the previous year, we have registered a lower overall number of events where the units of professional and volunteer firefighters would have to intervene. The overall number of registered events during the summer holiday months this year was 923 which, compared to last year’s 1306, means a decrease of 383 events. The regional firefighter statistics also point to a smaller number of occurrences of fires, technical rescues, neutralizing the consequences of leaks of hazardous substances and false alarms. The only increase compared to last year was in the number of accidents from 131 to 175.”

To finish the article on a more positive tone, the general police statistics show an international decrease in traffic accident casualties. On the statistics page of the Police of the Czech Republic website, Captain Jozef Bocán states, “During the summer holidays, police dealt with 16 545 traffic accidents in total, whereas there were 126 fatalities, 505 people were seriously injured and 5 252 had minor injuries. It is, therefore, possible to say that we detect a year-to-year decrease in the most practical and at the same time the most watched indicators, which are the number of fatalities and serious injuries. We are specifically talking about year-to-year decline of 21 fatalities and 105 seriously injured people. The number of fatalities is the lowest since 1990. There are many factors that influence traffic accidents in a long run, namely, they include the behaviour of the users of motorways, climatic forces, technical state of the vehicle and also communication and traffic education.”
