III. Day with Your Hospital

The third annual “Day with Your Hospital” took place on June 17, 2016 on the grounds of the Vsetín Hospital a.s. The hospital was the main organizer and INDET SAFETY SYSTEMS a.s. (ISS), which has supported the hospital over a long term, was the general partner in the event.

Not even bad weather could dampen public interest in gaining information from the sphere of health care, which was provided by experts, and in having an opportunity to visit accessible departments. In the end they could even undergo some examinations and tests.

In the morning, the agenda of activities was aimed at young students from local schools, who tried their hands at the basics of first aid, checked out a first response vehicle and a fire truck, as well as seeing a demonstration so that they could witness emergency and fire rescue teams from the Zlín region in action. They participated in various games and contests designed to build positive attitudes to prevention and to encourage them to take good care of their health from an early age.

In the afternoon, the youths were replaced by groups of older visitors who had their blood pressure checked or their body mass indexes (BMI) measured. With the help of a UV lamp, they checked whether they know proper hand washing techniques, which is not so straightforward to some as one might think.

They had a go at Nordic walking (walking with trekking poles) under the supervision of an instructor and they got acquainted with ways of avoiding back pain at the rehabilitation department stand.

A giant inflatable model of lungs was on display throughout the whole event as bonus and as a way to draw attention to prevention, diagnostics and treatment of lung cancer. The model contained a realistic imitation tumour, and a video recording of a bronchoscopy was placed inside one of the lung’s lobes. The Healthy Lungs project was prepared in cooperation with the OnkoMaják organization (http://www.onkomajak.cz/), which also prepared a similar program last year when the theme was focused on the large intestine.

The event was accompanied by an exhibition presenting the history of the Vsetín Hospital a.s., which is celebrating its 105th anniversary this year. There were also illustrations promoting blood donation (contest organized by the hospital and the Red Cross, Who Loves – Donates). The need for blood donors is constantly rising despite the development of different new treatments. On average, each citizen receives a blood transfusion four times and twelve procedures requiring blood (source: Czech Red Cross web pages). The Vsetín Hospital a.s. tries to promote blood drives to the maximum and it regularly organizes blood donor and recruitment events.

We attended the event as well. We had the opportunity to take a look at those departments where the public has restricted to due to rather full capacities. For example, we visited the Surgery Department, the Delivery Room, the Orthopedics Department and last but not least the Department of Long-term Care. As a company we have supported the purchase of new equipment for several of these departments, however probably the biggest changes and renovations were made in the Department of Long-term Care, where we donated CZK 400 000 for new beds. During the tour, we heard words of gratitude directly from a patient, who praised the comfortable bed as well as the great care and attentiveness of the hospital’s personnel. We are glad that we can participate in helping those who really need it.
