The month of June traditionally belongs to the children and the Young Cyclists Competition. This time, the Zlin regional round took place on the traffic playground in Valasske Mezirici on 1 June 2015.
The rules of the competition did not change. Four teams in the 1st category (age 10-12) and four teams in the 2nd category (age 13-16) competed in four disciplines. The disciplines included: handling of maps, principles of first aid, cycling skills, riding on the traffic playground (practical skills testing in the rules of the road for cyclists) and a test of traffic signs (theoretical testing in rules of riding on roads). Each team had to include two girls and two boys. They compete together to achieve a perfect score in each discipline. The winner in each category then proceeds to the national finals to take place on 16 – 18 June 2015 in Chomoutkov. This year’s winner for the Zlín Region in the 1st category was the Zdounky Elementary School and, in the 2nd category, the Krizna Elementary School from Valasske Mezirici. If these teams are successful in the national finals, they will participate in the international round to take place in Vienna this year.
INDET SAFETY SYSTEMS a.s. supported the competition in the Zlin Region for the third time. The company recognizes that, with the increasing traffic on roads, the number of other traffic participants rises as well, especially children, and this is why ISS welcomes the idea of the BESIP competition as very beneficial. The regional round is preceded by the school and “county” rounds (continuation of the tradition, which was established before the abolition of counties in 2002). The schoolchildren prepare extensively with their teachers where they not only practice the right sound techniques on roads and crossing through barriers but, first and foremost, theoretical knowledge pertaining to traffic signs and first aid. Constant repetition leads to improvement and understanding. The children can apply the knowledge gained, not only during the competition but, most importantly, on the roads, which is the biggest benefit of all. After all, in the first five months of this year, five young lives have already been lost (source: The Ministry of Transport).
