This conference featured sixteen expert lectures on breast carcinoma
Breast Carcinoma – A Current Problem, was a specialized conference with a nursing and medical components held in the Vsetín Community Centre. Medical experts were able to exchange experiences in this area. In the nursing sessions, participants learned about future possibilities for patients suffering from this disease as well as the prognoses for furure reproduction. The psychological aspects of oncological patient care were also very interesting for all participants.
The medical component of the conference addressed prevention of breast carcinoma, possibilities of treatment, imaging methods, and the development of the disease. Radiotherapy and heritability were also discussed. There were approximately 120 participants at the conference. Mgr. Jaroslava Hrabicová, Assistant Manager for Special Treatment, evaluated all the lectures at a high level. The Director of Vsetín Hospital, MUDr. Martin Metelka, MBA, thanked the experts and sponsors. He also said:
“ This conference has been supported by Indet Safety Systems in a meaningful way. The company has been a very important sponsor of our hospital for a long time.”
On the topic of the treatment of breast carcinoma, we can summarize that we have an externally accredited screening workplace with high quality mammography at the Vsetín Hospital. Surgery and oncological wards as well as a rehabilitation ward are ready to help patients. Our laboratories are also well equipped. “The Mammo-Centre in Vsetín started its activities on the first of December 2011. During the last 17 months 7900 screenings have been carried out. In 94 cases, carcinoma was diagnosed,” announced MUDr. Zdeněk Mutina – the Head Physician at the Screening Centre.
The Screening Centre is the place where all breast examinations and preventive check-ups are carried out – these services are available even for women who do not feel ill. Preventive breast screening is carried out for women over 45 years of age in 2-year intervals.
The Head Physician of the Oncological Ward of the Vsetín Hospital, MUDr. Zdeněk Janáček, reflected on the breast carcinoma situation in the region of Vsetín from 1985 to 2012. He refers to the first period as the “pre-mammography period”. “Over 14 years, 270 cases of carcinoma were diagnosed. Doctors usually had to chose radical treatments (237 cases) because they weren’t able to diagnose the disease sooner,” explained Dr. Janáček.
The first mammography facility was installed in Vsetín in 1996. In the beginning, women from our region were slow to get used to it. In 2002, screening procedures were established for women between 45 and 69 years of age. In 2002 the age restrictions were eliminated. “The initial objective was not very good because one third of our patients are women over 69 years of age. A lot of carcinoma is diagnosed in patients up to the age of 79,” added MUDr. Janáček. When looking at the next 14 years (1999-2012) the number of patients diagnosed went up (519). Since we were able to diagnose 75% of patients in the first or second phase, the result was a lower mortality rate, “ said Dr. Janáček. However doctors are still not completely satisfied with the situation since only 55% of women come to the screening centre, a level that is not really that bad, but they would like to reach a higher figure.
