In November 2011 the surgical department in Vsetin hospital acquired a new mobile colonoscope to examine the colon during surgery. The advantage of this device lies not only in its mobility but especially in the detection of the smallest – i.e. the earliest stages of cancer. Thanks to this accurate diagnostics it is possible to complete the procedure with minimum trauma to the body. The device was purchased thanks to a gift from a Vsetín company Indet Safety Systems (ISS).
„Thanks to the new colonoscope, the surgery can be tailored to the needs of the patient, ensuring minimum trauma to the body, minimum punctures and minimum resection of the colon,“ adds the head of the surgical department Jaroslav Sankot, adding that the patients may be operated on repeatedly in case of colon cancer and usually this involves a removal of part of the colon. Thanks to the new device, the resection may be significantly smaller in extent and thus much more sparing. Even though this is a new device, the surgeons have already used the colonoscope several times. „We had a patient that we operated on one and a half year ago because of a large tumor, during follow up we found a very small lesion at inaccessible location close to the spleen. Now we operated on this patient using laparoscopic approach with the colonoscope. We found the tumor that would not be visible with naked eye under normal circumstances and we made a small only about 12 centimeter resection of the colon with the tumor. Pathology discovered a very small – about one centimeter in size – lesion, which is a very early stage of cancer. This kind of intervention brings great benefits for the patients,“ added the head physician. The purchase of the device that costs 200,000 crowns was enabled by a gift from ISS. „We are a traditional partner of Vsetín hospital and this is the way we try to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of our employees. We try to give them not only job opportunities but also the necessary infrastructure in the case they or their family members become ill. Therefore we consider the presence of the hospital and its facilities to be very important for the life in our region,“ said the general manager of ISS Jiří Václavík. The hospital values the cooperation with ISS. They helped them with purchase of a whole range of devices. „For example a portable gastroscope or pulse oxymeter, used at the OBGYN department. Together with other donor they contributed to the purchase of a portable ultrasound device. We are glad that these companies are helping us and accommodate our needs,“ expressed the director of the hospital Martin Metelka the thanks to the donors.
