Competition for young cyclists 2014

Improving traffic safety for children is a concern at ISS as well as being one of the transport policy priorities at the Czech Ministry of Transport. Therefore, for the second year running, Indet Safety Systems, a joint-stock company, in cooperation with the BESIP organization, has supported the regional round of the traffic safety competition for young cyclists.

The final for the Zlín Region was held on May 28th at the traffic playground in Otrokovice (the competition is organized each year at a different traffic playground in the region). The competition was held in two categories and was attended by 32 children from the 4th to 8th grades in elementary school. None of the Vsetín school representatives managed to win awards this time round, but  an elementary school from nearby Valašské Meziříčí did earn recognition. They finished in first place in “Category II” an will continue on to the national finals. If they win, they will earn the right to represent the Czech Republic at European Final ETEC in Oslo, Norway.

Like last year, Indet Safety Systems awarded prizes to the winners, as is customary in such competitions, as well as to the other participants, all of whom demonstrated their enjoyment of the competition through their enthusiasm.

Enhancing traffic safety for children is a concern at ISS as well as being one of the transport policy priorities at the Czech Ministry of Transport. Traffic safety education focuses on passing on theoretical knowledge and practical skills as well. A well-conceived traffic safety education program plays an important role in building the value chain of children and young people and fundamentally affects attitudes of future drivers.

The competition is held annually. It is intended for children over 10 years of age, i.e. pupils from the 4th to 8th grades at elementary schools and corresponding grades at other schools in two categories:

Category I.    5th -6th grades of elementary school (sometimes 4th grade).
Category II.   7th- 8th grades of elementary school (sometimes 6th grade).

Pupils from special schools participate in the competition in some regions and districts.

The goal is to contribute the effectiveness of traffic safety education systems in schools, to correct children’s behaviour in order to enhance their safety in traffic and reduce traffic accidents, to deepen and improve pupils’ knowledge and skills in the application of traffic rules necessary for safe cycling, and to encourage and increase students’ interest in safe transportation and traffic education.
